Sitting at my usual spot today. Looked up to watch raindrops create a unique overlay on my window view, and that’s when I had an aha moment.
Same desk. Same view, but today’s rain changed everything.
The window? Covered in raindrops, creating one version of reality. The window next door? Angled differently, barely touched by rain, but seeing the same soggy scene outside.
Here’s what hit me:
✅ Perception = YOUR automatic experience (your view)
✅ Perspective = Recognizing OTHER windows exist beyond your view.
Both views are equally valid, and exist..
In 20+ years of transforming team dynamics, I’ve seen projects fail not from lack of skill, but from leaders stuck at their own window. We can’t afford to look through just one window, especially when faced with a problem. Breakthroughs happens when you:
🔍 Acknowledge your perception is just ONE view
🔄 Intentionally seek OTHER perspectives
🎯 Use the perceptions and perspectives gathered to navigate disagreements and drive SOLUTIONS
Your challenge this week: Before your next difficult conversation, ask yourself – “What window is this person looking through?”
The shift in approach might surprise you. What’s YOUR experience with perception vs. perspective in leadership? Share in the comments 👇
